The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is a full-sized luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) produced by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. The Cullinan is the unique SUV launched by Rolls-Royce, and is also the brand's first all-wheel drive vehicle.[4] It is named after the Cullinan Diamond, the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever discovered.[4] In the U.S., it is not exempt from the gas guzzler tax because it is classified as a station wagon rather than an SUV.

The Cullinan sits above the Ghost and below the Phantom in Rolls-Royce's line-up,[5] with a starting price in the United States of approximately US$ 325,000 (£ 255,000).[4] [6] It was unveiled in May 2018 at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este.[7]

Overview [edit]

It was long rumoured that the car company would venture into making an SUV. Auto Express exclusively reported that a design was in the works and correctly that the name would be Cullinan.[8] This was due to its competitors such as Bentley and Lamborghini venturing into the SUV business with the Bentayga and the Urus respectively. On 17 September 2015, it was confirmed by Rolls-Royce design chief Giles Taylor that the company was tinkering on it.[ clarification needed ] [9] At the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show, Rolls Royce's CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös said that the SUV will be revealed in 2018 and be on the market in 2019.[10]

A model was spotted testing on 23 December 2015 by Autocar.[11]

The name "Cullinan" was confirmed by Rolls Royce on 13 February 2018.[12] [13] It is named after the Cullinan diamond, the largest diamond ever found at 3100 carats.[14]

According to own Statement of BMW AG, Rolls Royce and similar institutions, this generation of automobile with combustion engine has a preview to an end until 2030, due the company only producing electric models.[15]

As of 2019 the British automaker claimed that despite expanding production and hiring more employees, there simply wasn't enough supply to satisfy the demand fuelled by brand loyalist and new-found female, younger buyers.[16]

Most of the Cullinan's exterior design has been adapted from the novel 8th generation Rolls Royce Phantom such as the front grille and the headlights. It is visible that the car's exterior design has been adapted from other British SUVs as well.

The interior features a new leather applied seats and wooden appliances. The car has new leather camping seats known as the "cocktail suit" which is deployed from the luggage compartment. This car is the only Rolls Royce to have a glass partition between the luggage compartment and the passenger compartment.

The Cullinan features various driving modes and among them, the off-road mode gives the car it's full potential. It also has a dynamic suspension system that changes it's height by 40 mm at off-road mode.[17]

Testing phase [edit]

The car is reported to have started its testing phase on 2 January 2016,[18] and has since been seen testing on snow.[19] [20] [21]

The final tests were conducted with the partnership of National Geographic in 2018 and it was tested in various terrains.[22]

Platform [edit]

The Cullinan uses an aluminium spaceframe chassis; this is a version of Rolls-Royce's modular "Architecture of Luxury" platform.[3] This platform made its debut in the Phantom VIII.[5]

Suspension [edit]

The Cullinan uses a double-wishbone front axle and a 5-link rear axle.[3] It is fitted with self-levelling air suspension and electronically controlled dampers front and rear.[23] It is also equipped with electrically actuated active anti-roll bars.[5]

The Cullinan is also fitted with a stereo camera integrated into the front windscreen that scans the road ahead and adjusts the suspension proactively so as to improve ride quality. This system, dubbed "The Flagbearer" by Rolls-Royce, operates at speeds of up to 100 km/h (62 mph).[24] Michael Snell, Marketing Manager of the Americas for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars NA stated, "Even with the updated improvements to Cullinan's suspension and drive systems, the ride experience has not been compromised as the vehicle still retains our signature "Magic Carpet Ride"[25] experience while you drive over any terrain."[26]

Like the Phantom VIII, the Cullinan employs a four-wheel steering system to improve both maneuverability at low speeds and stability at higher speeds.[4]

Powertrain [edit]

The Cullinan is exclusively available with a twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre V12 engine.[3] ZF's 8HP 8-speed automatic transmission is the Cullinan's sole gearbox option.[4] The Cullinan uses a permanent all-wheel drive system.[5]

Black Badge Cullinan [edit]

The Black Cullinan is a special edition of the Cullinan which is performance based. Its exterior features are painted black (including the Spirit of Ecstasy) and its Interior consists of carbon fibre applications. The leather used in the interior is black and borders are coloured according to the exterior colour.

The current production cars with the Rolls Royce Black Badge marque are the Rolls-Royce Wraith and the Rolls-Royce Dawn.[27]

Cullinan Black Badge Capella [edit]

It is a one-off Rolls Royce Cullinan. The Rolls Royce Motor Cars claims that the car is based on a star brighter than the sun. The exterior has been painted bright yellow while the interior has a Starlight Headliner, first used in the Phantom Celestial.[28]

It is a sporty version of the Cullinan. Spofec is a division of its larger company Novitec, and has tuned the SUV. Changes include a 40-millimeter lower riding height controlled by a CanTronic control module which freely modifies the already-existing air-suspension system. The Overdose also dons a wide-body kit and sits on 24-inch alloy wheels. A reworked 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 now generates 685 hp (511 kW) of power and 1010 N·m (745 lb-ft) of torque, an increase of 122 hp (91 kW) of power and 160 N·m (118 lb-ft) of torque from the standard Cullinan.[29]

Mansory Billionaire [edit]

It is a vehicle based on the Cullinan, made by Mansory. The Billionaire got its name through it being the result of a joint collaboration between Mansory and the luxury label Billionaire, part of the Plein Group, a German fashion brand. The car has larger air intakes, a new front spoiler, and a widebody kit. On the rear, there are quad-exhausts and revised air-outlets. The Billionaire has 23-inch alloy wheels, both in front and rear. Complementary of the fashion brand, the interior has been completely re-decked with crocodile leather. The reworked 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 gives the car 610 hp (455 kW) and 950 N·m (701 lb-ft) of torque, an increase of 40 hp (30 kW) and 100 N·m (74 lb-ft) from the standard Cullinan, which allows the Billionaire to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h) in just 5 seconds, and topping out at a top speed of 174 mph (280 km/h). Only 13 units of the Billionaire will be made for a starting price of €785,000 ($924,730).[30] [31]

Mansory Coastline [edit]

It is a vehicle based on the Cullinan, made by Mansory. The Coastline got its name from its body colour which is a mixture of matte blue and silver tones. The car has larger air intakes, a new front spoiler, and a widebody kit, like the Billionaire. The side skirts have been elongated to make the Coastline appear like it has less ground clearance. The Coastline has 24-inch alloy wheels, both in front and back. The interior also has been completely reworked to match the colour scheme of the body paint. Due to extensive modifications to the 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 engine, the power output is 610 hp (455 kW), and the torque output is 950 N·m (701 lb-ft). Acceleration and top speed are the same as the Billionaire's. Only 8 units of the Coastline will be produced.[32]

The Mansory Wide body is a special edition based on the Coastline by Mansory and has a lesser amount of bodywork. This car can be brought with the stock Cullinan exterior paintwork. This is less expensive than the standard edition Coastline.[33]
